Climate change is a major concern that has an impact on populations, infrastructure, and ecosystems. According to the 6th Assessment Report of IPCC (2021), climate change is expected to be “widespread, rapid, and intensifying”. The effects of climate hazards on environmental quality have gotten worse over the past decades (Karmen Poljansek, 2017; Cutter, 2018; IPCC 20221). Predicting hazard interaction is challenging, especially when they take on complex forms like those driven on by multiple (compound/cascading) hazards. It is proved that the cumulative impact of multiple interacting hazards is greater than the total effects of the single ones (Terzi et al., 2019). This can result in an underestimation of risk. Eventually, these complex hazards are likely to have significant effects on populations, infrastructures, and ecosystems due to the poor level of preparedness (De Ruiter, 2020). Furthermore,…

One year ago, my father and I didn’t see each other for almost a week. It all started when I shouted at him out of a hot temper when he and his friends were singing loudly at home while I was studying at night. And now I feel guilty for acting like that towards my father. I tormented myself as to why I did that. I could have chosen a better solution. For many days, I kept thinking and living in self-blame. When my father came home from work, I could see how tired he was. I realized that my father also had his sadness and that the short moments with his friends were also ruined by his son. The more I think about it,…

During the past four years, I studied Economics major at [university] – Vietnam, with English being the sole instruction language. Though my field of study at undergraduate level was not related to [major you want to study in Masters], I had a chance to have more engagement in English language thanks to this advantage. Together with my part-time job as an English teacher since I was a freshman, my passion for education and teaching language gradually grew bigger, so upon graduation, I decided to pursue my career path as an English teacher rather than a businesswoman. While I am grateful for the comprehensive knowledge about economy and society that my major brings to me, I would rather use it as a tool for me to apply under the perspective of an educationalist. To fill my gap of language knowledge, I have always strived…

My brother and I were born and raised in a low-income family, but that has never hindered our determination to learn. Our parents always encouraged us to work hard and study diligently in order to succeed, and their advice has remained deeply ingrained in me. My desire to learn about Korean education came about quite unexpectedly. In eighth grade, as the internet began to emerge in Vietnam, I discovered the Korean television program Running Man. Through this program, I learned many things about Korea and its people, including traditional costumes, cuisine, and beautiful cultural landmarks. What impressed me most was the dedication, perseverance, and hard work of the Korean people, reflected through the efforts of the cast members…

With a strong aspiration to pursue higher education abroad, I have developed a concrete study plan in preparation for the GKS Master’s Program if I receive the scholarship as follows:
First, I will strengthen my English and Korean language proficiency to successfully adapt to an international academic environment and overcome initial language difficulties. My passion for Korean culture – nurtured through my interest in Korean media such as Running Man – has given me an early understanding of Korea, its people, and its traditions. When I entered my third year of university, I could only participate in an online Korean program at a leading foreign language center in Hanoi due to time and financial constraints. However, this course strengthened my foreign language skills, particularly Korean, and served as a stepping stone toward achieving my goal of attending universities in Korea. This experience significantly improved my Korean skills and introduced me to dedicated instructors and peers, including …

Storytelling has always been a passion of mine, helping me connect with others and understand the world. My love for it grew after reading “Teacher Man” by Frank McCourt, an Irish-American educator. His ability to captivate students through stories of his upbringing in Limerick and Irish literature shows me how storytelling can educate and inspire. As a GOI-IES scholar, I look forward to immersing myself in Ireland’s rich narrative traditions, exploring its literature, and discovering new ways to use storytelling as a powerful educational tool. In Vietnam, English education often focuses on vocabulary and grammar without realworld application, making it difficult for students to apply their language skills in meaningful ways. Ellis (2003) emphasizes that language is best acquired through reallife and meaningful content…

My 12-year experience in Vietnamese public schools reflects an education system centered on heavy curriculum and rote memorization. Due to the lack of soft skills such as communication and presentation skills, 237,000 recent graduates of the public education system faced unemployment in 2017 (EVBN,2018,p24-37). This reality has raised my deep concern in education for low-middle income students in rural areas of Vietnam. Initiated in October 2020, Beyond Borders is my response to the current inequity in Vietnam education by offering high-quality online courses that help students develop life-long learning strategies. My long-term plan for professional development is to transfer from a language teacher to a TechEd entrepreneur…

On a sweltering summer day, I was in complete shock when my 8th grade English teacher said to me “You’re lazy and stupid. You will be nothing but a loser”. Her words along with my classmates’ laughter were so hurtful that they almost froze my heart and created within me a burning desire to improve my English as an act of revenge. I studied day in and day out with the hope to join Bac Giang Gifted High School (CBG) – a high school for gifted students in my province so that I can have a better learning environment. Despite my teachers’ doubts about my competencies and my parents’ impediment, I finally became the first student in the commune to study at CBG. Being a top 10 – student, I thought my English was excellent enough. However, a visit to Hanoi in 12th grade made me realize that…

My name is Nguyen Thi Tuyen. I graduated from Hanoi University in July 2018, and my major is English Interpreting and Translation. I am writing to seek further opportunities to pursue my Master’s degree TESOL at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) this fall semester. Growing up, I was confident in my abilities and never tolerated insults. However, I was shaken when my 8th-grade English teacher told me: “You’re stupid. You will be nothing but a loser”. Her comments, along with my classmates’ laughter, were so painful that they sparked a deep determination within me to excel in English, earning me the admission to Bac Giang gifted High school – the most provincial prestigious school – to reclaim my confidence. However, even there, I encountered a challenge familiar to many provincial students: a strong foundation in grammar and test preparation but limited practical communication skills…
